Quebec, striking students reach agreement
MONTREAL (CP) - The Quebec government and striking university and junior college students have announced an agreement in principle to end a strike over cuts to student grants.
Quebec's education minister announced on Saturday that $482 million would be reinvested in the grant programs over five years.
The extra money will come from the federal Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation.
"I'm happy for students," Education Minister Jean-Marc Fournier said at a news conference.
"It's proof it can work when we have a collaborative effort with Ottawa-it can work for all Quebecers."
About 180,000 students went out on strike five weeks ago to protest cuts to the $103-million grant program.
