ik - from an old article I found reprinted and copied so many times I don,t know who it is. But interesting nonetheless...
I have always maintained that Quebec's "Quiet Revolution"'s main success was the replacement of one religious elite with another, and the replacement of Roman Catholicism, with "Quebecism" as it's national religious orthodoxy. The 1960's only succeeded in replacing one set of Archbishops, Bishops, Priests and religious clergy with a secular clergy class: politicians intellectuals and journalists of the separatist stripe.
This elite has raised Quebec to the level of a secular deity, a new secular church, complete with it's catechism (Bill 101) it's dogmas, High Priests, and blasphemers and heretics. This new orthodoxy is as hide-bound and rigid as the old one was. Quebec has long had a culture of a trained political elite.
Historically, the Jesuits trained the leaders of Quebec by teaching them the arts and classics, not commerce. They encouraged the best and the brightest to go into politics, or the priesthood or the legal professions.
Quebec replaced most of its priests with politicians in the 60's and has been using them as intermediaries to God ever since. Today's Quebec orthodoxy has neither the room nor the tolerance for any other religion than Quebecism. Either you are a believer or your are a heretic, an infidel. Indeed, Quebec is ruled by a taliban of it's own. A Taliban in the language of Moliere.
