I saw a great band last night at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, QC called the D. Rangers. From Winnipeg, they play a brand of music called bluegrass punk. Fairly skilled musicians, they're tight enough as a group to be good, but loose and unpolished enough to make it all feel spontaneous and fun. I recommend them.
But I REALLY want to recommend the first act who opened the show of three bands, Romi Mayes. Also from the Peg, she's traveling with the D. Rangers, and uses a couple of them as her band. Beautiful tunes, haunting voice...penetrating, soulful. Reminds me a bit of Neko. Cute too. :-) You gotta check her out. Here's a sample.
This is the kinda music that makes me wanna play again. :-(
